Natural Sources:

Rattan happens to be the largest source used to create wicker. It is an Asian climbing palm tree that is found in tropical rain forests. It can grow to be as long as 600 feet but usually is no more than 2 inches in diameter.

Cane is the stem of larger rattan trees. Usually fine cane is utilized to make natural wicker, or for stained pieces.

Reed is a term assigned to all the swamp grasses that are similar to straw. This material is found on the early American Wicker chairs.

Bamboo is classified as a large tropical grass that can grow over 100 feet. It can grow up to 36" per day. Bamboo plants are found growing in the warm areas of temperate climates. It has a hollow stem, which differs from the rattan, which has a solid vine.

All Weather or Resin:

We now have modern man-made weather proof materials to make wicker. This wicker is known as all weather wicker, outdoor wicker, indoor/outdoor wicker or resin wicker. The all weather wicker comes in a large choice of color finishes and can be woven into any number of designs just like natural wicker. All weather wicker furniture can be used outdoors with minimal maintenance or it can be used indoors in sunrooms, dining rooms, living rooms or family rooms. Unlike natural wicker, outdoor wicker provides a smooth finish. It retains its beauty and smooth desirable texture for decades. All weather wicker is made from a resin and holds the color throughout the thickness of the cane. Therefore, scratches don’t tend to show on all weather wicker products and typically don’t need to be touched up. The frames are made from aluminum which are sturdy and won’t degrade over time. With some minor care, resin wicker will last a long time, remain comfortable and look great for years to come. All weather wicker is made into many types of furniture as in: sofas, chairs, lounges, loveseats, patio tables, gliders, swings, coffee tables and ottomans.
